Casablanca

Not sure I need to say this, but I adore old movies.

(Let me guess, you're not surprised.)

While you don't have to love the classics as well as I do to enjoy my Matinee Classics Cozy Mystery Series, I decided to make a list of the movies I mention in each book.

For this article, let's look at the title movie from book 1, Here's Looking at Murder, Kid.

Casablanca (1942)

Starring Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, and Claude Rains.

The actual top billing leaves off Rains and includes Paul Henreid (as Ilse's husband, Victor Laszlo), but honestly, Rains as Captain Louis Renault steals every scene he's in. He's wonderful, and I confess to having a weird little crush on him.

Bigger crush on Bogie.

Casablanca is a classic among classics. What's not to love? You have the heartbreaking romance of Rick and Ilsa, the backdrop of World War II, and the poignant "As Time Goes By" song that Sam does indeed play again, and again.

Interesting note, the quote "Play it again, Sam" isn't actually part of the movie. The closest real line is said by Ilse: "Play it, Sam."

In addition, the dramatic cinematography and not-so-hidden messages about the United States taking a stand in the war make Casablanca a film that endures as time goes by.

See what I did there?

Famous quotes:

"Here's looking at you, kid."

"Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship."

"Play it, Sam. Play 'As Time Goes By'."

"Round up the usual suspects."

"We'll always have Paris."

"Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine."

"Ilsa, I'm no good at being noble, but it doesn't take much to see that the problems of three little people don't amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world."

Did I miss any of your favorites?
